Min Aung Hlaing endorsed Mr. Trump&#8217;s false claim that the 2020 U.S. election was stolen, and thanked him for <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/federal-judge-trump-order-voice-of-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">shutting down funding for U.S.-backed media<\/a><\/span> outlets that have long provided independent coverage of conflict-wracked Myanmar.<\/p>\n<p> The military <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/myanmar-silent-strike-junta-coup-anniversary-state-of-emergency\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">ousted Aung San Suu Kyi&#8217;s elected civilian government<\/a><\/span> in 2021, plunging the country, which is also known as Burma, into civil war. Suu Kyi has <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/aung-san-suu-kyi-myanmar-court-7-more-years-corruption-conviction-capping-proceedings-against-her\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">remained imprisoned<\/a><\/span> since then.<\/p>\n<p> The U.S. State Department sanctioned the junta chief and others for <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/myanmar-soldiers-rape-behead-kill-17-people-rampage-residents-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">using &#8220;violence and terror to oppress&#8221;<\/a><\/span> Burmese people and &#8220;denying them the ability to freely choose their own leaders.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> U.S. diplomats do not formally engage with the junta, but Mr. Trump sent a letter to Min Aung Hlaing by name on Monday telling him the U.S. would impose a 40% tariff from August 1, down from a threatened 44%.
