{"id":10077,"date":"2025-07-12T00:17:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-12T00:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gunnewsusa.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/12\/one-year-after-butler-assassination-attempt-secret-service-bolsters-security-with-drones-mobile-command-posts\/"},"modified":"2025-07-12T00:17:02","modified_gmt":"2025-07-12T00:17:02","slug":"one-year-after-butler-assassination-attempt-secret-service-bolsters-security-with-drones-mobile-command-posts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunnewsusa.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/12\/one-year-after-butler-assassination-attempt-secret-service-bolsters-security-with-drones-mobile-command-posts\/","title":{"rendered":"One year after Butler assassination attempt, Secret Service bolsters security with drones, mobile command posts"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<p><em>Laurel, Maryland<\/em> \u2014 It was almost one year ago that 20-year-old Thomas Crooks <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-shot-rally-assassination-attempt\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">attempted to assassinate<\/a><\/span> President Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, an incident which prompted <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-assassination-attempts-house-task-force-report\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">several investigations<\/a><\/span> into the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/timeline-trump-rally-shooting\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">U.S. Secret Service&#8217;s actions<\/a><\/span> and procedures on that day. <\/p>\n<p>Prior to <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/trump-shooting-statement-joe-biden-updates\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">the shooting<\/a><\/span> on July 13, 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/lifeofthomascrooks\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Crooks<\/a> flew his own commercial drone for 11 minutes above the Butler campaign rally site, but the Secret Service missed it. <\/p>\n<p>This week, CBS News was taken inside the Secret Service&#8217;s James J. Rowley Training Center in Laurel, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C., to see the agency&#8217;s newest eyes in the sky, a fleet of military-grade drones that reimagine aerial reconnaissance in a post-Butler era. <\/p>\n<p>Matt Quinn, Secret Service deputy director, told CBS News he feels confident in the new technology. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes, we&#8217;re in position now, to not just detect, but to mitigate unauthorized UAS (unmanned aircraft systems),&#8221; Quinn said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Butler, local police warnings did not reach Secret Service counter-snipers because the agencies <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/senate-report-trump-assassination-attempt-butler-secret-service\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">could not radio each other directly<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the military-grade drones, the Secret Service also established a system of mobile command posts \u2014 with price tags ranging from $600,000 to $1.5 million \u2014 which allow agents to communicate over radio directly with local law enforcement, something that did not exist in Butler.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is tremendous to be able to consolidate communications, make sure everyone&#8217;s on the same page,&#8221; Quinn said.<\/p>\n<p>It is one of the many lessons still being learned a year later.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re focused today on providing the absolute best technology, the best communications equipment, so that July 13th is never repeated,&#8221; Quinn said. <\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the Secret Service <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-assassination-attempt-butler-secret-service-suspension\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">announced it was suspending<\/a><\/span> six personnel without pay following an internal investigation into the Butler shooting, which along <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/possible-shots-fired-at-trump-rally-in-butler-pennsylvania\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">with wounding Mr. Trump<\/a><\/span>, left one <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pittsburgh\/news\/man-killed-during-trump-assassination-attempt-identified-as-corey-comperatore\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">rallygoer dead<\/a><\/span> and two others injured. <\/p>\n<p>Quinn believes that the changes the Secret Service are making are a step in the right direction. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m confident that we are getting there,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- data-recirc-source=\"queryly\" --><\/p>\n<aside class=\"component list recirculation component--type-recirculation \">\n<p><h3 class=\"component__title\">More from CBS News<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>    <!-- tags --><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author\">\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/team\/nicole-sganga\/\" class=\"content-author__name\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Nicole  Sganga<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author__bio\">\n<div class=\"content-author__full-information\">\n<p class=\"content-author__text\">Nicole Sganga is CBS News&#8217; homeland security and justice correspondent.
