{"id":1294,"date":"2025-03-30T13:29:08","date_gmt":"2025-03-30T13:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gunnewsusa.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/30\/americans-want-trumps-focus-more-on-prices-not-tariffs-most-approve-of-deportation-efforts-cbs-news-poll\/"},"modified":"2025-03-30T13:29:08","modified_gmt":"2025-03-30T13:29:08","slug":"americans-want-trumps-focus-more-on-prices-not-tariffs-most-approve-of-deportation-efforts-cbs-news-poll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunnewsusa.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/30\/americans-want-trumps-focus-more-on-prices-not-tariffs-most-approve-of-deportation-efforts-cbs-news-poll\/","title":{"rendered":"Americans want Trump&#8217;s focus more on prices, not tariffs; most approve of deportation efforts \u2014 CBS News poll"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<p>After a week that brought <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/consumer-confidence-falls-tariffs-inflation-trump\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">tough<\/a><\/span> <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/dow-jones-stocks-down-today-trump-tariffs-03-28-2025\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">economic<\/a><\/span> news and polling showing Americans&#8217;\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/economic-outlook-more-pessimistic-opinion-poll\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">views of the economy<\/a><\/span>\u00a0are still sour, most say President Trump has focused too much on <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-tariffs-april-2-liberation-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">tariffs<\/a><\/span> \u2014 which they believe will end up raising prices \u2014 and not enough on lowering prices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This has Americans collectively skeptical right now about the ability of Mr. Trump&#8217;s policies to make them financially better off, a sentiment that was key to the success of his <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/feature\/election-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">2024 campaign<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet that&#8217;s balanced out for Mr. Trump today by continued majority approval on <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/immigration-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">immigration<\/a><\/span> and on his deportation program, specifically. That comes especially \u2014 but not exclusively \u2014 from his Republican base, many of whom say that&#8217;s just as important as the economy in their evaluations.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the public continues to weigh the changes brought by the federal workforce reductions, with many believing they will impact programs they care about.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the matter involving administration officials&#8217; <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/israeli-officials-signal-texts-exposed-intelligence-sources-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">use of the Signal app<\/a><\/span>, while seen as serious, does not seem tied to evaluations of Mr. Trump overall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-original\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\"\/><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From a list of items, most say the administration is focused too much on tariffs, and by contrast, is not focused enough on lowering prices.<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump won the 2024 election in large part on the economy and the idea that he&#8217;d make Americans financially better off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just before he took office, a sizable four in 10 felt his policies as president would do just that.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about what&#8217;s happening today, just a quarter of Americans say those policies are making them financially better off. Nearly twice as many say he&#8217;s making their finances worse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-original\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/2025\/03\/29\/2b062db1-b38f-42a6-80ae-ef071e7d8950\/trump-finances-better-worse.png?v=95354023eeb6141c58c08d9a5716f291#\" alt=\"trump-finances-better-worse.png \" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/2025\/03\/29\/2b062db1-b38f-42a6-80ae-ef071e7d8950\/trump-finances-better-worse.png?v=95354023eeb6141c58c08d9a5716f291 1x\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\"\/><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even among Republicans, things have tempered. Just before he took office, three-fourths of Republicans said Mr. Trump&#8217;s policies as president would make them better off, and now, under half of them say that&#8217;s what is happening so far.<\/p>\n<p>Tariffs, or the threat of them, don&#8217;t seem to be helping.<\/p>\n<p>Most oppose new tariffs, as they have for a while, and big numbers think that&#8217;ll lead to higher prices in the short term.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The administration has argued that tariffs will have long-term benefits, but people are more inclined to think they&#8217;ll raise prices rather than lower them in the long term, too. They are the number one reason that people still rate the economy badly,\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/economic-outlook-more-pessimistic-opinion-poll\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">according to recent polling<\/a><\/span>.)<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, though, Mr. Trump doesn&#8217;t fully &#8220;own&#8221; the issue. But half of Republicans say it would be acceptable.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Judges and the courts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Americans overwhelmingly support the principle of judicial review of the legality of Mr. Trump&#8217;s policies, including most Republicans. Majorities of Republicans would have their members push back on Mr. Trump if they disagree.\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><em>This CBS News\/YouGov survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 2,609 U.S. adults interviewed between March 27-28, 2025. The sample was weighted to be representative of adults nationwide according to gender, age, race, and education, based on the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Current Population Survey, as well as 2024 presidential vote.
