From housing to healthcare, childcare to college, working families are facing an affordability crisis. The California Dream is slipping away,&#8221; Becerra said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>The 67-year-old is a born and raised Sacramento native who has served as attorney general for California and, most recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/speculation-grows-over-xavier-becerra-political-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">as the nation&#8217;s top health official<\/a>\u00a0in the Biden administration. <\/p>\n<p>Becerra becomes one of the more than a dozen candidates who have officially declared a run for California&#8217;s governorship in 2026. <\/p>\n<p>Notable Democrats who have already declared they&#8217;re running include former state Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/california-governors-race-2026-state-sen-leader-toni-atkins-announces-candidacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Toni Atkins<\/a>, current Lt. Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sacramento\/news\/eleni-kounalakis-announces-2026-run-for-california-governor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Eleni Kounalakis<\/a>, former U.S. House Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/orange-county-rep-katie-porter-california-governor-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Katie Porter<\/a>, current state Superintendent Tony Thurmond, former LA mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/former-los-angeles-mayor-antonio-villaraigosa-to-run-for-california-governor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Antonio Villaraigosa<\/a>, and California Democratic Party vice chair <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/betty-yee-former-california-controller-2026-campaignf-for-governor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Betty Yee<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Only a handful of Republicans have announced they will be running for California governor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/riverside-county-sheriff-chad-bianco-to-announce-run-for-california-governor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">including Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Former Vice President and 2024 Democratic nominee Kamala Harris&#8217; name <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sacramento\/news\/emerson-college-poll-possible-kamala-harris-run-for-california-governor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">has also surfaced as a possible gubernatorial candidate<\/a>. While a recent poll has shown she would enjoy wide support, Harris has not announced if she will enter the race. <\/p>\n<p>Becerra&#8217;s tenure as California attorney general coincided with Trump&#8217;s first term as president. Becerra has touted the number of times he sued the Trump administration \u2013 120, by his count. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whether defending workers against wage theft or looking out for families in need of a hospital for their kids, standing up for DREAMers or fighting for clean air and water, I&#8217;ve always been driven by the California values instilled in me by my parents \u2013 a clerical and construction worker, both immigrants to America \u2013 who had the chance to earn their dream,&#8221; Becerra stated in his candidacy announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Becerra is a Stanford Law School alum and was formerly a state Assembly representative as well as a U.S. House representative.
