Merriam-Webster has added 200 new words and definitions to its dictionary. <\/p>\n
The new additions are added based on widespread use over time, and offer a window into the world today, according to Merriam-Webster.com<\/a>. <\/p>\n \u201cThe one constant of a vibrant living language is change,\u201d explains Gregory Barlow, President of Merriam-Webster. \u201cWe continuously encounter new ways of describing the world around us, and the dictionary is a record of those changes.\u201d<\/p>\n Some of the new additions include nepo baby<\/a>, cash grab<\/a> and creepy-crawly<\/a>. <\/p>\n On “Book-tok” you will often hear about genres like true crime<\/a> and beach reads<\/a>, now they have an official spot in the dictionary. Music has brought freestyle<\/a> and the jazz-like sounds of a jam band<\/a> to the conversation. If video games are more your style try a\u00a0dungeon crawler<\/a>, a video game “primarily focused on defeating enemies while exploring a usually randomly generated labyrinthine or dungeon-like environment.\u201d<\/p>\n Foodies are trying new things like burrata<\/a>, capicola<\/a> and street corn<\/a>. If you enjoy a beer then you’ve probably heard about \u00a0the\u00a0International Bitterness Unit<\/a>, \u201cused to assess the concentration of a bitter compound found in hops in order to provide information about how bitter a beer is.\u201d<\/p>\n Just as science and nature evolve so does the dictionary to include new terms like heat index<\/a> and the dreaded\u00a0spotted lanternfly<\/a>. <\/p>\n Social media has taken over our lives and our dictionary. If you’re shadow banned<\/a> then you won’t show up on someone’s For You page<\/a>. But we should all get off our phones and touch grass<\/a> anyway. <\/p>\n Other things that have a spot in the modern lexicon include snog<\/a>, IDGAF<\/a> and badassery<\/a>. <\/p>\n It’s a presidential election year so you may hear terms such as MAGA<\/a>,\u00a0far left<\/a>,\u00a0far right<\/a>,\u00a0classical liberalism<\/a>, and\u00a0late capitalism<\/a> commonly used in political commentary. <\/p>\n \u201cOur lexicographers monitor a huge range of sources to select which words and definitions to add,\u201d says Peter Sokolowski, Editor at Large for Merriam-Webster. \u201cFrom academic journals to social media, these give us a very thorough view of the English language.\u201d<\/p>\n In case you’re wondering about the rest of the new words that made the list.
