{"id":2458,"date":"2025-04-10T16:18:41","date_gmt":"2025-04-10T16:18:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gunnewsusa.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/10\/daylight-saving-time-hearing-held-before-senate-panel-its-something-we-have-been-stuck-with-this-since-world-war-i\/"},"modified":"2025-04-10T16:18:42","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T16:18:42","slug":"daylight-saving-time-hearing-held-before-senate-panel-its-something-we-have-been-stuck-with-this-since-world-war-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunnewsusa.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/10\/daylight-saving-time-hearing-held-before-senate-panel-its-something-we-have-been-stuck-with-this-since-world-war-i\/","title":{"rendered":"Daylight saving time hearing held before Senate panel: &#8220;It&#8217;s something we have been stuck with this since World War I&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<p>A Senate committee heard from several experts Thursday on setting a year-round time standard, a few months after President Trump vowed to get rid of <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/time-change-daylight-saving-spring-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">daylight saving time<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Time is always complicated and the system we have is complicated, but it&#8217;s complicated because it&#8217;s a human creation,&#8221; said Scott Yates, the founder of the Stop the Clock movement, which supports getting rid of twice-yearly time changes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The sun moving around the earth doesn&#8217;t actually have anything to do with time,&#8221; Yates said. &#8220;We need this system, but this system has this bug right now, and the bug is daylight saving time, the switching of the clocks. And so if we have a little bit of time, a couple of years, so the individual states can address all of these complexities and make those decisions, then we will be able to get rid of this bug permanently. It is something we have been stuck with since World War I, and this is our opportunity to finally fix it.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Senate Commerce Committee hearing notice did not set a preference for daylight saving time or standard time, but instead said it would focus on &#8220;various issues around whether the country should continue &#8216;springing forward&#8217; and &#8216;falling back&#8217; each year with time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Daylight saving time begins in March, when clocks are moved forward an hour, and ends in October, when the clocks go back to standard time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The twice-yearly time changes are <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/daylight-saving-time-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">generally unpopular<\/a><\/span> among Americans, with 63% saying they\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/today.yougov.com\/topics\/politics\/articles-reports\/2021\/11\/04\/daylight-saving-time-americans-want-stay-permanent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">would like to eliminate<\/a>\u00a0them completely, compared to just 16% who said they would not, according to an Economist\/YouGov poll in November 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1001\/jamaneurol.2019.3780\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2020<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1001\/jamaneurol.2019.3780\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">commentary<\/a>\u00a0for the journal JAMA Neurology found evidence linking the annual transition to daylight saving time to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.sleep.2016.10.009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">increased strokes<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/jcm8030404\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">heart attacks<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5664\/jcsm.4938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">teen sleep deprivation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate in 2022 <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/daylight-saving-time-permanent-senate-vote-2023-sunshine-protection-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">passed a bill called the Sunshine Protection Act<\/a><\/span> to make daylight saving time permanent, but the bill never went anywhere in the House. The 2022 bill had 17 cosponsors from both parties and was spearheaded by then-Sen. Marco Rubio, who is now the Secretary of State in the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>But Mr. Trump possibly threw a wrench in the idea in December, when he posted on social media that &#8220;Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation.&#8221; In the same post, he said the &#8220;Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn&#8217;t!&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump in the past had supported making daylight saving time\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/president-trump-supports-making-daylight-saving-time-permanent\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">permanent<\/a><\/span> \u2014 that is, keeping clocks shifted one hour ahead, which happens in the spring.
