The messages were sent the same day Hegseth shared similar operational details in a separate Signal chat that inadvertently <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/atlantic-posts-more-texts-signal-group-chat\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">included The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg<\/a><\/span>, sparking\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/pentagon-watchdog-to-evaluate-hegseths-use-of-signal\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">widespread concern<\/a><\/span> over how senior officials handle sensitive military information.<\/p>\n<p>Among the recipients of the private messages was Hegseth&#8217;s wife, Jennifer, a former Fox News producer who holds no official role at the Department of Defense. She had previously drawn criticism after the Wall Street Journal reported she joined the defense secretary on official foreign trips and attended high-level meetings with international leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Also included in the chat were Hegseth&#8217;s brother, Phil Hegseth, and the defense secretary&#8217;s longtime personal attorney Tim Parlatore. While both hold positions at the Pentagon, it was not clear why either would require advance knowledge of strike plans in this case.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The second Signal chat was first reported by The New York Times.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on social media, Defense Department spokeperson Sean Parnell wrote Sunday, &#8220;There was no classified information in any Signal chat, no matter how many ways they try to write the story. What is true is that the Office of the Secretary of Defense is continuing to become stronger and more efficient in executing President Trump&#8217;s agenda.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Signal is an encrypted service mainly used for text messaging, although it can also be used for voice and video calls.
