{"id":5050,"date":"2025-05-06T00:03:05","date_gmt":"2025-05-06T00:03:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gunnewsusa.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/06\/trump-administration-to-cut-off-new-federal-research-grants-to-harvard\/"},"modified":"2025-05-06T00:03:05","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T00:03:05","slug":"trump-administration-to-cut-off-new-federal-research-grants-to-harvard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunnewsusa.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/06\/trump-administration-to-cut-off-new-federal-research-grants-to-harvard\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump administration to cut off new federal research grants to Harvard"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<p><em>Washington<\/em> \u2014 The Trump administration said Monday it would cut off all new federal research grants to Harvard University in the latest escalation of its battle with the school.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EDSecMcMahon\/status\/1919517481313427594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">letter,<\/a> Education Secretary Linda McMahon tells the Ivy League university that it is not eligible for any new federal grants until it meets the administration&#8217;s demands and &#8220;demonstrates responsible management of the university.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The two-page letter to the university&#8217;s president calls out what the administration views as Harvard&#8217;s &#8220;systemic pattern of violating federal law.&#8221; McMahon accuses Harvard of ignoring antisemitism, engaging in discrimination, abandoning &#8220;any semblance of academic rigor&#8221; and &#8220;disastrous mismanagement.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The above concerns are only a fraction of the long list of Harvard&#8217;s consistent violations of its own legal duties,&#8221; McMahon wrote. &#8220;Given these and other concerning allegations, this letter is to inform you that Harvard should no longer seek GRANTS from the federal government, since none will be provided.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Federal student loan funding and Pell Grants are not affected by the move, according to a senior Education Department official.<\/p>\n<p>Harvard did not immediately respond to a request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last week, President Trump said his administration would rescind the university&#8217;s <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-says-revoking-harvard-tax-exempt-status\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">tax-exempt status<\/a><\/span>, though he did not provide further details. Harvard president Alan Garber said such a move would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/us-news\/education\/trump-harvard-tax-exempt-status-3b114fb7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;highly illegal,&#8221;<\/a> in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/26\/7217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">tax code<\/a>\u00a0prohibits executive branch officials from asking an IRS employee to conduct or terminate an audit or investigation into a specific taxpayer.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/harvard-sues-trump-administration-funding-freeze\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Harvard filed a lawsuit<\/a><\/span> last month after the Trump administration announced it would freeze\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/boston\/news\/harvard-university-trump-federal-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">$2.2 billion<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in grants and $60 million in contracts to the university.
