Landau told reporters the group has faced &#8220;egregious discrimination&#8221; in South Africa \u2014 which the country&#8217;s government has denied.<\/p>\n<p>Landau said the new arrivals were &#8220;carefully vetted&#8221; in South Africa prior to their arrival. They <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/white-south-africa-afrikaner-refugees-united-states-arrival\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">departed the country&#8217;s capital city<\/a><\/span> of Johannesburg via a charter plane on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, President Trump <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-orders-u-s-refugee-resettlement-of-afrikaners\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">directed his government<\/a><\/span> to allow South Africans of European descent \u2014 particularly Afrikaners, who are largely descended from Dutch settlers \u2014 to be resettled through the U.S. refugee program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The administration and its allies, including South African-born billionaire Elon Musk, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-south-africa-afrikaner-white-farmers-7930f26fbac90468d26053c1b99a789f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">allege<\/a> members of South Africa&#8217;s White minority have faced discrimination by the country&#8217;s post-apartheid government, including through a controversial law that allows the government to take private land in some circumstances.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\">The first group of Afrikaners from South Africa to arrive for resettlement listen to remarks from US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and US Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Troy Edgar (both out of frame), after they arrived at Washington Dulles International Airport in Dulles, Virginia, on May 12, 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                SAUL LOEB\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;South Africa is confiscating land, and treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY,&#8221; Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social in February.<\/p>\n<p>The South African government has strongly denied any discrimination, and argues the land seizure law respects private property rights and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-musk-south-africa-funding-cut-aid-adf4db9dfe9eeafa3f4bac79b3d77137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">only targets land<\/a> that isn&#8217;t used or doesn&#8217;t serve the public interest. Land ownership has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/03\/us\/politics\/south-africa-ramaphosa-trump-land-us-aid.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">long been a sensitive issue<\/a> in South Africa, which was ruled by its White minority under the apartheid system until the mid-1990s.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is ironic that the executive order makes provision for refugee status in the US for a group in South Africa that remains amongst the most economically privileged, while vulnerable people in the U.S. from other parts of the world are being deported and denied asylum despite real hardship,&#8221; South Africa&#8217;s Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation said in a February statement.<\/p>\n<p>Landau also cited attacks on South African farmers in recent years, saying the new arrivals have faced &#8220;egregious and targeted threats.&#8221; The South African government <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-south-africa-refugees-afrikaners-white-9d6f87ae9b09ac21ba6ae2a2197b11d3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">argues<\/a> attacks in the country&#8217;s rural farming communities are not racially targeted and are part of South Africa&#8217;s broader crime problem.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has also clashed with the South African government over foreign policy, including its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/02\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-addresses-human-rights-violations-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">criticism of Israel<\/a>. Mr. Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/02\/addressing-egregious-actions-of-the-republic-of-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">signed an executive order<\/a> in February directing his government to halt aid to South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The South Africans <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/white-south-african-refugees-afrikaners-us-soon-as-next-week\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">moved through the refugee process<\/a><\/span> at an unusually fast clip, arriving in the United States after a few months, even though the process frequently takes years.<\/p>\n<p>They also arrived in the United States despite a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/realigning-the-united-states-refugee-admissions-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">broader effort<\/a> by the Trump administration to suspend the refugee admission program \u2014 a move that has drawn <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-refugee-admissions-suspension-ruling-aa8d219b8ad771eb6c034c45476a7ab3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">court challenges<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Refugee group declines to help resettle South Africans<\/h2>\n<p>The federal government typically relies on nonprofits to help resettle refugees in the United States, but at least one group, Episcopal Migration Ministries, said Monday it will not assist with the South African arrivals.<\/p>\n<p>Episcopal Bishop Sean Rowe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.episcopalchurch.org\/publicaffairs\/letter-from-presiding-bishop-sean-rowe-on-episcopal-migration-ministries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said the government<\/a> informed the group \u2014 which receives federal grants \u2014 that it would be expected to assist the South Africans.
