Gavin Newsom is planning Monday to make a significant push to address homeless encampments. <\/p>\n<p>The governor&#8217;s office is framing the address as a &#8220;statewide funding announcement&#8221; regarding California&#8217;s mental health and homelessness issues. <\/p>\n<p>As detailed by the governor&#8217;s office, Newsom will be releasing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Encampment-Ordinance-formatted.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">model ordinance<\/a> that cities can use as a basis for their own local ordinances against homeless encampments. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s nothing compassionate about letting people die on the streets,&#8221; Newsom said in a statement ahead of Monday&#8217;s announcement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sacramento\/news\/supreme-court-allows-camping-bans-targeting-homeless-capitol-region-reacts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Many California cities<\/a> have already been implementing stiffer policies against homeless encampments since<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/supreme-court-constitutionality-anti-camping-ordinances-grants-pass-oregon\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\"> the Supreme Court ruling in favor of anti-camping ordinances<\/a><\/span>. <\/p>\n<p>Newsom cited that Supreme Court ruling, along with a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/homeless-encampments-california-gavin-newsom-executive-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\"> 2024 executive order from his office<\/a>, as part of his call on cities to act.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0&#8220;The time for inaction is over. There are no more excuses,&#8221; Newsom stated. <\/p>\n<p>The effort is also being backed by $3.3 billion in new Prop 1 funding, according to the governor&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom&#8217;s focus on the homelessness issue comes as he is both approaching the end of his second and final term in the California governor&#8217;s office and as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sacramento\/news\/trump-dares-newsom-president-run-california-high-speed-rail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">speculation builds about his political future<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Monday&#8217;s press conference will be virtual.
