Peterson, Hegseth says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<p>Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Friday  the new name for the\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/watch-live-usns-harvey-milk-arrives-in-san-francisco-bay\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">USNS Harvey Milk<\/a><\/span>, a fleet replenishment oiler named after the assassinated gay rights leader and San Francisco politician who served in the U.S. Navy.<\/p>\n<p>The ship will be named the USNS Oscar V. Peterson in honor of a Navy chief watertender who died in World War II and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, Hegseth said in a video <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecDef\/status\/1938568563838886269\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">posted to social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hegseth made the announcement ahead of the last weekend of <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/feature\/gay-pride-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Pride Month<\/a><\/span>, the monthlong observance of the LGBTQ+ community that also coincides with the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising of 1969. Celebrations are expected this weekend in <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/san-francisco-pride-parade-celebration-road-closures-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">San Francisco<\/a><\/span>, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/chicago\/news\/chicago-pride-parade-2025-route-map-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Chicago<\/a><\/span>, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nyc-pride-2025-theme-stonewall-riots\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">New York<\/a><\/span> and other cities.<\/p>\n<p>The USNS Harvey Milk was <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/navy-launches-ship-named-for-pioneering-gay-san-francisco-leader-harvey-milk\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">christened<\/a><\/span> in 2021 during President Joe Biden&#8217;s term. In Friday&#8217;s social media video, Hegseth said that the ship&#8217;s name change was made in line with &#8220;taking the politics out of ship naming.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not renaming the ship to anything political,&#8221; Hegseth said. &#8220;This is not about political activists, unlike the previous administration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People want to be proud of the ship they&#8217;re sailing in,&#8221; Hegseth said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\">The USNS Harvey Milk (T-AO 206) completes a replenishment at sea with two Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force vessels in 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                LaShawn Sykes<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>CBS News <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/navy-new-name-usns-harvey-milk-ships-named-for-civil-rights-leaders\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">reported earlier this month<\/a><\/span> that the Navy was considering renaming the Harvey Milk and multiple naval ships named after civil rights leaders and prominent American voices.<\/p>\n<p>Milk was serving on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors when he and Mayor George Moscone  were\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/san-francisco-still-stunned-by-1978-city-hall-assassinations\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">assassinated<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in City Hall in 1978. Before his political career, Milk served in the Navy Reserve from 1951 until 1955, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/prologue.blogs.archives.gov\/2023\/06\/28\/harvey-milk-veteran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Archives<\/a>. He voluntarily resigned as he was facing court-martial over allegedly participating in a &#8220;homosexual act&#8221; in 1953.<\/p>\n<p>The ship&#8217;s new namesake, Peterson, was gravely wounded in May 1942 while leading a repair party on the USS Neosho during an aerial attack from the Japanese in the Coral Sea, Hegseth said.
