{"id":9660,"date":"2025-07-02T11:50:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T11:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gunnewsusa.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/02\/trump-tariffs-have-delayed-interest-rate-cuts-federal-reserve-chair-jerome-powell-says\/"},"modified":"2025-07-02T11:50:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T11:50:11","slug":"trump-tariffs-have-delayed-interest-rate-cuts-federal-reserve-chair-jerome-powell-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunnewsusa.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/02\/trump-tariffs-have-delayed-interest-rate-cuts-federal-reserve-chair-jerome-powell-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump tariffs have delayed interest rate cuts, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<p>Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Tuesday that the U.S. central bank has held off on lowering interest rates this year because of President Trump&#8217;s tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a gathering of central bankers in Portugal, Powell said &#8220;I think that&#8217;s right&#8221; in response to a moderator&#8217;s question about whether the Fed would have cut its benchmark rate if not for the U.S. imposing steep tariffs on key trading partners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In effect, we went on hold when we saw the size of the tariffs, and essentially all inflation forecasts for the United States went up materially as a consequence of the tariffs,&#8221; Powell said. &#8220;So we didn&#8217;t overreact \u2014 in fact, we didn&#8217;t react at all. We&#8217;re simply taking some time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Powell said that tariffs have yet to have much of an impact on the U.S. economy, but reiterated his view that the levies could lead to higher <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fed-chair-jerome-powell-interest-rates-testimony\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">inflation later this summer<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump administration officials say steeper tariffs are necessary to reinvigorate the U.S. manufacturing sector; ensure fair trade with other countries; and advance other domestic policy priorities, such as curbing the flow of unauthorized immigrants and fentanyl into the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump has\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-says-maybe-try-to-fire-federal-reserve-jerome-powell-interest-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">repeatedly lashed out at Powell<\/a><\/span> this year over the Fed&#8217;s decision to keep interest rates level. In June, Mr. Trump publicly mused over <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-says-maybe-try-to-fire-federal-reserve-jerome-powell-interest-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">whether to fire him<\/a><\/span>, although many legal experts say it&#8217;s not clear he has the constitutional authority <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/can-trump-fire-powell-term-end-federal-reserve-what-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">to do so<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The president said in a post Monday on Truth Social, his social media platform, that Fed officials &#8220;should be ashamed of themselves&#8221; for not moving sooner to ease interest rates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although Powell chairs the central bank, interest-rate decisions are set jointly by the Federal Open Market Committee, a 12-member panel of Fed officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Fed on June 18 opted to hold the federal funds rate \u2014 what banks charge each other for overnight loans \u2014 steady for a <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fed-meeting-today-fomc-interest-rate-decision-federal-reserve-june\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">fourth straight meeting<\/a><\/span>.
