Time to take over space. Let&#8217;s launch,&#8221; Duffy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecDuffy\/status\/1943107856254877927\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wrote on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NASA is currently led by Janet Petro, a former leader of the Kennedy Space Center who has served as the agency&#8217;s acting administrator since the start of Mr. Trump&#8217;s term. Petro&#8217;s status is unclear; a NASA spokesperson said the agency had no further details.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-jared-isaacman-nasa-administrator\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">initially chose<\/a><\/span> billionaire private astronaut Jared Isaacman to lead NASA, but the president pulled his nomination just days before the Senate was set to hold a confirmation vote, citing a &#8220;thorough review of prior associations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last weekend, the president <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114808616176041421\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">expanded on the issue<\/a>, saying Isaacman was recommended to him by Musk &#8220;and, while I thought his friend was very good, I was surprised to learn that he was a blue blooded Democrat, who had never contributed to a Republican before.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Federal Election Commission records <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/receipts\/individual-contributions\/?contributor_name=Jared%20Isaacman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">show<\/a> Isaacman has donated to Democratic congressional candidates and groups, though he has also given some money to Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I also thought it inappropriate that a very close friend of Elon, who was in the Space Business, run NASA, when NASA is such a big part of Elon&#8217;s corporate life,&#8221; Mr. Trump wrote in a Truth Social post last weekend, referring to Musk&#8217;s company SpaceX, which has <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-elon-musk-federal-subsidies-cost-tesla-spacex-billions\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">NASA contracts<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Isaacman <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-jared-isaacman-nasa-administrator\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">has previously flown on SpaceX rockets<\/a><\/span> as a private astronaut. In a Monday post on X, Isaacman <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1942321556975432161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">described himself<\/a> as &#8220;relatively apolitical&#8221; and a &#8220;right-leaning moderate,&#8221; and said he disclosed his political donations prior to his nomination. He also said he &#8220;only know[s] Elon professionally&#8221; and does not own any equity in SpaceX, but he has a &#8220;firsthand appreciation for what he and his companies have accomplished.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Days after Isaacman&#8217;s nomination was pulled, a <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/trump-elon-musk-executive-orders\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">feud between Mr. Trump and Musk<\/a><\/span> \u2014 a onetime Trump ally who served as a special government employee heading up the Department of Government Efficiency \u2014 burst into public view. The attacks between the president and the world&#8217;s richest man have largely focused on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a massive spending package that Musk has criticized.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Duffy is temporarily taking over NASA at an important time for the agency, which is aiming to <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/nasa-artemis-moon-mission-faces-delays-space-agency-pushes-ahead-60-minutes\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">return astronauts to the moon<\/a><\/span> and, eventually, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/president-trumps-fy26-budget-revitalizes-human-space-exploration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">land humans on Mars<\/a> for the first time ever.<\/p>\n<p>Duffy is the latest Trump administration official to serve in a dual-hatted role.
